About This England

This England is the quarterly magazine for everyone who loves England’s scenery, heritage, history and people.

Launched in 1968 with the light-hearted slogan, “as refreshing as a pot of tea” and with a mission of “poetry not politics”, it is packed with absorbing articles, beautiful photography and uplifting stories and poems celebrating all that is best about England.

Inside This England summer 2024 issue

As summer approaches and we look forward to getting out and about a little more, our latest issue of This England is packed with lovely things to do across the country.

With sports fever rising, Jan Johnstone explains how the modern Olympics had their roots in the Shropshire town of Much Wenlock! You can even do an Olympic trail…

Glyndebourne celebrates its 90th birthday this season. We visit England’s loveliest opera house in the heart of the Sussex countryside and look back at how it all started, how it remains so glorious today and how you can visit.

We also mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings which changed the course of the Second World War. Graham Bebbington explains the meticulous planning that went into them and urges us to never forget those who paid the ultimate price.

But, that’s not all…

Historic Homes of England

Amanda Hodges visits Chawton House in Hampshire which played an instrumental role in the life of Jane Austen and her work.

Made in England

Deborah Stone meets a farmer who has diversified to offer brides real flower petal confetti, in the process producing flower fields so Instagrammable that they are known the world over.

Heritage Church

Simon Whaley visits the impressive Carlisle Cathedral in Cumbria and explains about its turbulent history.

The Maze Craze

Jan Johnstone explores the history of garden mazes, why we still love the challenge of them, and where to visit the best ones this summer.

A Gem on my Doorstep

Esther Chilton writes with enthusiasm on the magnificent Clumber Park in Nottinghamshire which she discovered  three years ago after moving to the area.

Plus, Cornucopia, Showtown in Blackpool, Abba in Brighton, walking the Saxon Way, the best books of the season, a fabulous selection of summer events and much, much more. We hope you enjoy every page!

Angela Linforth, Editor of This England Angela Linforth, Editor of This England

Meet the Editor: Angela Linforth

It is my absolute joy to be the editor of This England - what a voyage of discovery! I’m the third editor in the history of this wonderful magazine, having taken over in 2018.

I have been a journalist and editor for most of my working life, although I had a foray briefly into the traditional English hand-made furniture industry.

What I love about This England is its breadth of subject matter. While one day I can be learning about the history of aviation, or the favourite dogs of the royal family, the next I can be sailing up the River Severn or visiting Berkeley Castle to see the site of Edward II’s supposed death by red-hot poker (something I was reminded of, of course, through the pages of This England).

In the five years that I’ve been here I’ve discovered so many fascinating things about our country, which despite the best efforts of our leaders, continues to thrill.

I have also absolutely loved the interactions with you, our wonderful readers, who are always coming forward with such a wealth of good ideas for the magazine, pithy comments on our features and feedback on aspects of this country that are little known and wonderful to discover.

If you want to get in touch, share a story or comment on anything in the magazine, please email us at editor@thisengland.co.uk or write to us at This England, 185-186 Fleet Street, London EC4A 2HS.
